Hello and welcome to our Jamieson family blog page! We have set up this site to allow us to record and share with friends and family our exploits as we (at long last) begin renovating the derelict water mill at Little Ennochie into what will hopefully be a fab and funky family house!! This has only taken us 3 1/2 years to get this far (and two bambinos!) .... so here's hoping this blog doesn't run for another 3 1/2 years !

As a bit of an intro, the mill is located on the outskirts of the village of Finzean, near Banchory in Aberdeenshire. The building sits on the banks of the river Feugh with great views of open fields and the hills, including Clachnaben. We have been slogging through Aberdeenshire planning and building warrants for what feels like forever, but we now have everything in place and the ball is rolling!

I will endevour to update this blog weekly with updates and photos so will see how that goes! Please keep watching and here's hoping this thing doesn't bankrupt us!

Week 49 - Glass in, roof on ... yipee!

Hi folks,

At last the long awaited glass arrived and was installed during this week.  We can now say that we are water tight in the main extension ... well, almost!  The bank of roof windows linking the mill and extension look really great - amazing effect looking up, and they look pretty cool looking across from roof level as well (engineering geeks like me, please see photos below!).  The metal profile sheets are nearly all installed on the main roof also, just some minor edges, flashings and secret guttering to finish.

Other jobs progressed outside include some more cladding and a bit more work on the steel deck.

Inside, the fireplace construction is now complete and interfaced with the roof.  Just need the stove and flue in now.  That should happen in the next couple of weeks when the stove arrives.  A lot of other components arrived onsite this week, namely the biomass pellet boiler (it is a heavy beast!), pellet vacuum system, pellet hopper, solar panels, hot water tanks and all the sanitary ware.

Last but not least, the stone wall inside the Mill was dressed with lime pointing - looks really nice, attached photo doesn't do it justice.

Bye for now!

Roof glazing installed ... has structural strength so can be walked on!
Glazing and metal profile roofing - sinusoidal profile used (old school!)
View from below ... it was dark outside!
Looking across the bank of windows - a lot of light streaming in, even when it's dull outside!
View from outside - horizontal beams in for deck also
Cladding starting on the main extension
Hallway inside Mill - lime pointing complete
Fireplace complete - waiting on insert stove
The mother of all boilers - this is the Compact 24 pellet boiler
This alien contraption is the vacuum pump to suck wood pellets from hopper to boiler
This is our 6T pellet hopper .... in bits awaiting assembly!

Week 48 - Cladding, metal roofs and snow fall!

Hi again,

This week has seen a few new areas starting to progress.  Outside a start was made to fitting the metal profile sheeting on the main extension roof.  No photos of this I'm afraid as the weather was so cold and snowy when we visited the site I didn't want to freeze to death getting one!  The larch cladding was also started on the utility extension this week.  The first layer is almost on this building and it looks brilliant.  We're not planning on treating the cladding, the plan is to leave it to weather naturally to a silvery grey ... will take a few years for that to happen!

Inside the only major thing to note was the exposing of two old openings inside the Mill.  We opened up the plasterboard to expose an old opening in one of the upstairs bedroom and another inside the guest bedroom.  We are leaving the stone exposed here and replacing the old wooden lintels with new Douglas Fir ones.  Nice little features.

Glass is due to arrive next week for the roof lights ... watch this space.  Also hope to finalise the design for the glazed hall next week.  Getting there ... slowly but surely!

Until next week ....

Another view of utility ext with cladding ... yes, it was cold!!
Old mill opening opened up again in upstairs bedroom

Week 47 - Utility/Office and Fireplace taking shape!

Hi folks,

It was another lovely winter's day at Little Ennochie today with the sun streaming in ... it was a positively balmy 4 degC!  This week has seen some really good progress in the utility block off to the east of the site.  Inside this smaller building we now have a utility room, plant room, office and store room.  The cloakroom is still boarded up from outside, but that obviously has walls up too now.  We're really happy with the size of the space and also the amount of light that comes in ... a perfect south facing aspect.  As mentioned in last week's blog, we have decided to build a small extension to this building to hold the wood pellet bulk hopper.  As such, you will see from the photos below that we now have the hoses installed running along the roof of the store and down into the plant room where the boiler will be.  Should be a neat and tidy solution in the end!

Inside the main extension, the fireplace has grown a bit since last week!  Almost full height now.  It is looking really great and we can't wait to see what it looks like once it is lime-pointed and has the stove insert added.  No sign of roof glass again this week, hopefully next week will be the week!!

Week 46 - Some more plasterboard ...

Hi,

Catching up tonight on a couple of weeks activity for the blog!  During week 46 the downstairs bedrooms were fitted with plasterboard and there was some more progress on the roof, but hey ho, no glass therefore still not water tight!  Rooms are now all formed inside the Mill.  This week also saw our builder sort out the installation details with our supplier for the biomass boiler.  This means we are now going to go to local planning for another small extension to the office/utility block so that we can house our 6 ton pellet hopper as close as possible for running the wood pellet vacuum feed pipes. Here's hoping we get it through without hassle!  Our track record to date isn't exactly speedy on that front!!

Outside, the outer beams for the decking were fitted ... nice space.

Anyone for a G&T?
Until next week ....
